Who can enter? The ages are from 12 years to over 60. There are three classes. Between 12 and 14 years entrants are placed in the Mini Trek group. Between 14 and 18 years entrants are placed in the Main Event. Over 18 years entrants are placed in the Veterans Event. So far the highest combined age for a team was 149 years! Where is it held? The walk always takes place somewhere on the OS Sheet TQ167. Do we need to train for it? You most certainly need to be fit and used to walking with a loaded ruck sack. What equipment do we need? You will need everything for a two day, one night self supported orienteering type course. You will need, ideally, two good pairs of foot ware together with a change of socks. Dry feet travel better. You will need to cater for changeable weather. Over a weekend the weather often changes for the better or the worse. Just as important as waterproofs is sun screen! You will need, as a team, one three person tent, this will be carried between members. You will need map and compass. There is a check on what food you will be preparing, on the Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, to ensure it is adequate and sensible. Hence you will need to be able to boil water and cook the food you brought with you. You will need a suitable outdoor First Aid kit, and survival kit. If you get hurt or lost in bad weather you may need them. What Skills do we need? You must be familiar with using a map and compass out doors. You must have knowledge of basic First Aid in the team. Ideally all members will have basic knowledge and one will have more advanced awareness. How long is the course? The event is normally 18 miles ( 28 Kilometres ) on the Saturday and 12 miles ( 19 Kilometres ) on the Sunday. The Main Event covers both Saturday and Sunday, camping over night on the Saturday. The Veterans covers Saturday and Saturday night. The Mini Trek does a 9 mile walk on Saturday, camping over night and a 6 mile walk on Sunday. At the end of each leg of the route the teams arrive at a check point. Here they can replenish water and carry out some form of incident. They then carry on to the next grid reference which is given at that check point. Camping overnight? Teams will need overnight camping kit. All teams, except Mini Trekers, must carry this kit. This will need to be a tent, sleeping bags. stove and food for the evening meal and breakfast. You must carry the kit both days and so should not "lose" it on route. You will be marked on your camping and cooking skills and this will be a worthwhile addition to your scores. Some Do's and Don'ts Do come, have a good time and enjoy a tough event. Every one who enters tries to meet their own personal goal, either as a team member or as a remaining member of a team.
